next on raw tools is irish producer and label owner, costelloe, delivering two tracks much in the manner of his previous works, both of them at the fine line between techno and house music.
while the title track, “infiniti” is definitely a dance floor track, with its rave pads and solid bassline, “pheta x” shows a more darker side of costelloe’s music. both of these cuts get special treatment from two of the most prolific and respected producers out there, lerosa and dj overdose, rounding off the ep with two amazing, yet diverse remixes.

four tracks of hissing, hypnotic paranoia emerge on the debut from relaxer. on the a side, smeared whispers seethe across viscous grooves that pulse with strange, bittersweet strings. side b’s recoil delivers a stomping 137-bpm techno bomb with an elevator-shaft-freefall. the ep dissolves into glowing pathos on the closing track.

hotflushs remix series continues in style with fresh interpretations of dense & pikas colt and airless. the uk techno duo’s slamming main-room originals are still hot properties, but in the hands of george fitzgerald and grain they get new life and perspective breathed into them.

rezzett are arguably one of the trilogy tapes goto acts. the london duo has previously released a trio of impressive, off-kilter eps of fuzzy house and techno jams for will bankheads much-loved imprint. happily, zik zak is every bit as essential as their previous material, expertly blurring the boundaries between techno, experimental electronics, and distorted hardcore. while the drowsy-but-sweaty hey hugo all sampled vocal yelps, sweeping chords and clattering percussion is probably the most obviously ear-catching of the four cuts, theres plenty to get excited about elsewhere. check, for example, the intricate electronics and eyes-closed loveliness of the title track, and the fluid melodiousness of opener afyon or, for that matter, the comforting bliss of ep closer noklue.

under his chemotex alias, marcos cabral has been one of the trilogy tapes most productive artists in recent times. this is his third 12&#8243,,, for will bankhead’s imprint in less than 12 months. unlike cabral’s recent album for l.i.e.s, which reveled in its’ own distorted, balls-out intensity, thulsa strives to get a balance between becalmed techno hypnotism, skuzzy grooves and gently melodious intent. this blend is perhaps most satisfyingly mixed on the industrial-tinged clank of “delta city-, though the woozier, scuffled late night warmth of “music for security” pushes it close. twice he heads towards deeper territory, first on the title track’s trance-inducing synthesizer loop groove, and secondly on the dubby, locked-in tech-house majesty of “lorentz-.

i walk around in the solar field. from here, the surrounding beams look like cylinder­thick, motionless rain or comet tails painted onto the sky. the tower is all white because the sunrays are pointing directly at it, white in an erased way, like if you leave an empty patch on a drawing, and surrounded by a halo. i go over to one of the sun mirrors. it’s huge and darkish and cold when i touch it. i don’t know if it’s cold and immune to the sun or transfixed in a much more extreme way than the desert. a solar plant can take much more sunlight. it has direct access, like a clip through into the thing outside. the widest zone, like the highest point when it’s lightning. the sunlight is magnetic. intense heat from the mantle pushing against the crust to get closer to the sun.

straight out of the ukraine comes io (mulen) aka aleksandr voznichenko, a man whose back catalogue includes releases on labels such as rejected, eklectisch and area remote to name but a few. now he links up with one of paris’ premier labels, run by one of paris’ premier crews – apollonia. with one solid track and a classy remix from danish young gun malin génie, this is another surefire winner from apollonia. ‘to the unknown’ kicks things off with a steady build up. shrouded in a hazy mist it draws you to its understated groove, io turns in a very considered production that evolves at a slow yet utterly gripping pace. the energy levels rise like the tide of the ocean, engulfing you before you know it. io’s dexterity and cunning ability to keep the listener engaged manifests itself here, bomb! on the flip side, malin genie steps in to give ‘to the unknown’ a new lick of paint and what we get is a jazzy, minimal rework with a jaunty skip in its step and a wicked bassline.
